Element 6.3: Demonstrate behaviors that are consistent with the professional ethics of highly qualified teachers.
Artifact: Physical Education Curriculum: Plan & Practice Lesson Self Evaluation
Date: Spring 2012
Reflection: This self evaluation was done after my partner and I taught a lesson at Truxton Elementary School. We taught a circus themed lesson to kindergarten, fourth, and sixth grades. We had a variety of activities as well as a bouncy house. My partner and I looked back on the lesson and talked about what went well and what we could do better if we were to teach the lesson again. Highly qualified teachers are always looking for ways to improve. Reflections like this help teachers see their strengths and weaknesses. We made a point to involve both of these. As a future teacher, I want to always be open to trying new ways of teaching. This can be done by self evaluation, watching video of myself, or having another teacher watch my lessons. Improving teaching skills is what makes good teachers great teachers.
Element 6.4: Communicate in ways that convey respect and sensitivity.
Artifact: Adapted Physical Education & Sport Letter to Parents
Reflection: At the end of my time working with a student with disabilities, I wrote a letter to his parents describing what we had done throughout the semester and what I think he was capable of doing in the future. This letter was approved by my professor and sent to the students' parents. This student had many behavior problems and was difficult to work with at times. I had to word the letter in a way that told the parents this but did not offend them. I tried to focus on the positives I saw in the student by highlighting some of the good sessions we had. It is important for teachers to communicate respectfully with parents. Many parents may become defensive when they hear a lot of negative stories about their child. Parents do need to be informed of areas where students need work, but also need to hear how their child is doing well. During a future phone call or conference with a parent, I now know how to get my point across without getting the parent upset.
