Element 4.1: Demonstrate effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills across a variety of instructional formats.
Artifact: Project Adventure Poster
Date: Summer 2011
Reflection: As a part of one of my observation experiences, I created a poster to help students better understand what project adventure is all about. The poster involves basic platforms of project adventure, activities and quotes many instructors use during this type of unit. This poster was meant to be set up in the gym where students can see and read it. Students were allowed to view it before class, after class, and while they were waiting for their turn at a station. This poster shows that I can provide students with important information without necessarily verbally telling them. The quotes give students something to think about any may inspire them to challenge themselves. Posters and bulletin boards are important to help reach visual learners. Telling a class these things may not sink in as much as a visual aid. Making effective visual aids can help teachers to reach students they might not usually reach.
Element 4.2: Implement effective demonstrations, explanations, and instructional cues and prompts to link physical activity concepts to appropriate learning experiences.
Artifact: Basics of Effective Instruction in PE Teaching Lab Video
Date: Spring 2011
Reflection: When I was assigned to teach the game of Goalball in this lab, I had no idea how the game is played. I had to do a lot of research into the history, strategy, and game play. Since I had never heard of Goalball, I assumed most of the people I would be teaching had never heard of it either. I first showed a video of the game to show everybody what we would be working towards. I explained how the game came to be and why it is played the way it is. Most of the movements are movements many people have done before, just not in this context. I believe the students left with a better understanding of the game. Teachers occasionally have to teach subjects they are not completely familiar with. It is important for teachers to always expand their knowledge of sport and movement. This lesson is just one example of how I have put in the effort to learn more about activities I did not previously know about.
